Finding Resonance Beyond Time and Culture

Performing at a Noh theatre had long been one of my aspirations and stepping onto its stage was both an honour and a humbling experience.

The audience listened in complete stillness, and as the sound of the piano slowly filled the space alongside the scent of hinoki cypress, I experienced an atmosphere unlike anything a conventional concert hall can offer.

The programme was structured around Okina-tsuki Gobandate—the most formal sequence of a traditional Noh performance. Beginning with Okina, it unfolds through the five worlds of God, Warrior, Woman, Madness, and Demon. Following the principle of jo–ha–kyū, the programme gradually gathers energy before reaching its final culmination. Preparing this structure made me appreciate how centuries-old artistic forms continue to carry remarkable expressive power.

For the piano repertoire, I chose mostly Impressionist works, particularly those of Debussy and Ravel. What has always drawn me to their works is the way their music resembles Monet's paintings. Rather than moving toward a clear destination, the music seems simply to exist, allowing sound itself to unfold naturally. While preparing this project, I found myself sensing an unexpected kinship between this musical language and Japanese aesthetics—especially the flowing sense of time found in Noh.

Throughout the performance, I tried not to impose a direction on the music, but simply to remain present with each sound as it appeared, resonated, and faded away.

This project has deepened my admiration for Noh and given me a new way of thinking about music, time, and performance.

I am deeply grateful to everyone who attended, and to all those whose generosity and support made this concert possible.
