Pilgrimage of Sound is inspired by the ‘Jogī’—wandering musical communities in India, originally spiritual travellers whose journeys and music later became connected to Romani traditions. Jogi is said to mean Yogī (yoga practitioner) in Sanskrit, hinting at the close relationship between music, movement, and spirituality.
The idea for this concert grew out of my first solo journey to India—a completely unplanned trip. In the heart of the Thar Desert, I was unexpectedly invited to a Jogī village and witnessed the way they live. Together we sang, danced, and shared a meal.
Their music carries layers of history, blending Hindu, Islamic, and Sufi traditions. The Marwari language they spoke sounded musical—rolling, free and playful, as if reflecting their very way of life. The men’s voices were slightly husky, deep, and rich, with a timbre that reminded me of Spanish touched by hints of Arabic, harmonising so well with the desert landscape. I had never heard sounds so beautiful in my life.
Thinking of them as descendants of people who adapted and carried both life and music forward while moving through the harsh desert, I am reminded of how remarkable humans can be.
This program expresses music as a pilgrimage, featuring works by Liszt, Ravel, Bartók, and Wagner that resonate with themes connected to the Gypsies, Buddhism, and yoga.

ピアノコンサート 「音の巡礼」 のお知らせです
このコンサートはインドのジョーギー（Jogī） と呼ばれる人々から着想を得ています。
ジョーギーは、サンスクリット語の「ヨーギー（ヨガの修行者）」に由来する言葉で、宗教的な修行を行いながら各地を巡って暮らしていた人々を指します。その在り方は時代とともに形を変え、やがてヨーロッパへと渡り、ジプシー（ロマ）のルーツの一つになったとも言われています。
この構想のはじまりは、初めての一人旅として訪れたインドにあります。予定は立てず、ただ流れに身を任せた旅でした。
途中、タール砂漠にあるジョーギーの村に偶然招かれ、共に歌い、踊り、食事を囲み、彼らの暮らしに触れました。
彼らの音楽には、この土地が歩んできた歴史の層のように、ヒンドゥー、イスラム、スーフィーの伝統が重なり合っていました。彼らの話すマールワーリー語もまた、とても音楽的に響きます。コロコロと鳴くように話すのですが、彼らの自由な生き方そのもののように感じられました。男性は少ししゃがれた渋く深い声で、スペイン語に少しアラビア語を混ぜたような感じで、広大な砂漠の風景と不思議なほど調和していました。あれほど美しい音を、私はそれまで耳にしたことがなかったように思います。
過酷な砂漠を移動しながら、変化を受け入れ、命と音楽の両方を受け継ぎ繋げてきた人々の姿を思うと、人間という存在のたくましさと素晴らしさをあらためて感じずにはいられません。
このプログラムでは、リスト、ラヴェル、バルトーク、ワーグナーの中から、ジプシーや仏教、ヨガに関連する曲を選び、音の巡礼のを表現します。音が人とともに旅をし、形を変えながらも続いていく――その響きを感じていただければ幸いです。
