Pilgrimage of Sound | 音の巡礼

The concert Pilgrimage of Sound was inspired by India.

To complement its world, my friend, fashion designer Ellen Harrison, created a bespoke gown for the evening.

The deep purple silk carries a sense of warmth and serenity, reflecting the mood of the music and its connection to yogic heritage. Rather than replicate traditional attire, the design offers a subtle nod to the elegance of the sari through its asymmetrical neckline, pleated bodice, and flowing drape over the shoulder—a quiet homage to the beauty and craftsmanship of Indian dress, interpreted with the refinement of a concert silhouette. Each piece is individually designed and made to order, shaped through close collaboration and an appreciation for the individuality of the wearer.”

What struck me most in my conversation with Ellen was the care and sensitivity behind her approach to creating garments. While she specialises in stage costumes, she emphasised that the heart of her work lies in the character—the person who wears the costume—and whether the garment allows them to inhabit the character fully, to feel and move as the role itself.

I was moved by how she never imposes her own vision, but instead works in quiet harmony with the wearer. It reminded me of musicians: we do not just play simply as we wish, nor impose ourselves upon the music. Instead, we attune ourselves to the composer’s intentions, to the voice of the instrument, and to the work itself, allowing the performance to unfold naturally, with respect and in harmony.

Preparing for this concert also gave me an opportunity to reflect on Indian fashion. During my visit to Jaipur, I spoke with many artisans and observed them at work. It was a joy to witness how they live and to learn from them—their patience, skill, and care. They generously shared insights about their culture, and I was fascinated to discover how closely fashion is intertwined with their religious and spiritual traditions. Watching fabrics being dyed, woven, and shaped, I could sense the layers of culture and history quietly alive in their craft.

Historically, when Britain colonised India, Indian fashion and dyeing techniques were introduced to the UK. The previously limited colour palettes were transformed by India’s vibrant hues. In a world now filled with colour, it is fascinating to imagine a time when such shades were so rare. Encountering them then must have been a revelation—unexpected, inspiring, and full of joy. It’s a truly delightful thought to ponder.

This respect for Indian colour and aesthetic sensibility is woven into Ellen’s gown. In Japanese culture, there is a traditional practice called monkō, or “listening to the scent.” Through Ellen’s gown, I could similarly see the music, and I am profoundly grateful for her remarkable artistry.

“今回の演奏会のために特別に制作したシルクのガウンは、インドの芸術的伝統が持つ豊かさ、深み、そして精神的な響きに着想を得た一点物のデザインです。深い紫色のシルクは温かさと静けさをたたえ、音楽の雰囲気やヨガの伝統とのつながりを映し出しています。伝統的な衣装をそのまま再現するのではなく、アシンメトリーなネックライン、プリーツの施されたボディ、そして肩に流れるドレープによって、サリーの優雅さを静かに表しています。それはインドの衣装が持つ美しさと職人技への静かなオマージュであり、コンサート用の洗練されたシルエットとして再解釈されたものです。私の作品は個別にデザインされ、注文に応じて制作されるものであり、着る人の個性を大切にしながら、密接な対話を通じて形作られています。”

エレンとの対話で特に印象的だったのは、彼女の衣装製作への姿勢です。舞台衣装を得意とする彼女は、衣装を作るとき、まずキャラクターの人物像を考えます。そして、その役者がキャラクターになりきれる衣装であるかを最も大切にしています。自分の作りたいものを押し付けるのではなく、役者に寄り添う姿勢がとても印象的でした。

音楽の演奏者も似ているのかもしれません。ただ自分の弾きたいように弾くのではなく、曲や楽器に敬意を払いながら演奏する―その心持ちが音楽をより深く響かせます。

今回のコンサートに向けて、私自身もまたインドのファッションについて改めて考える機会となりました。ジャイプールを訪れた際、多くの職人の方々とお話しし、作業の様子を間近で拝見できたことは、とても貴重な体験でした。職人たちは、染め、織り、形作る一つひとつの工程を通して、自身の文化や歴史を教えてくださりました。ファッションと宗教や精神性が密接に結びついていることを知り、大変興味深かったです。

また歴史を辿ると、イギリスがインドを植民地としていた時代、インドのファッションや染色技術がイギリスへと伝わったと言われています。それまで控えめだった色彩の世界に、インドの鮮やかな色がもたらされたことで、人々の装いは大きく変化しました。色に溢れる今の時代には想像し難いですが、当時の淡白な色合いの世界に鮮やかな色彩が加わったことが、人々にどれほどの驚きと喜びをもたらしたのか、思わず心を馳せずにはいられません。

今回のドレスにも、そうしたインドの色彩と美意識への敬意が織り込まれています。日本の伝統的な「聞香（香りを聴く）」のように、エレンの素晴らしいガウンを通して、音楽を見ることができたような気がします。エレンの素晴らしい創作に心から感謝いたします。
